Hello everyone, I am Sajid Hussain from Gilgit Baltistan Pakistan. I have been studying Masters of Civil Engineering at Northwestern Polytechnical University since 2022. Studying at NPU has been a transformative experience, both academically and personally. As an international student, I was welcomed into a dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment that encouraged growth, innovation, and collaboration. I feel proud to be the part of such international and diverse environment.
1.Academic Journey and Research Experience
One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey was working under the guidance of my advisor, Professor Hou Xiuhui, whose expertise and mentorship have been invaluable in shaping my research. Through numerous discussions, experiments, and brainstorming sessions, I gained deep insights into structural engineering and advanced vibration control techniques.
During my studies, I dedicated myself to researching innovative solutions for seismic resilience in civil engineering structures. One of my most significant achievements was the development and publication of patent for the Quasi-Zero Stiffness Dampers (QZSD), a novel energy dissipating device designed to improve resilience during earthquake and aftershocks. In addition I also conducted experimental and numerical studies on negative stiffness mechanical metamaterials, exploring their potential for structural damping and energy dissipation. Beyond research, I had the opportunity to present my findings at academic forums and contribute to discussions on advancing engineering solutions for earthquake-resistant structures. These accomplishments have strengthened my commitment to innovative engineering solutions and reinforced my passion for academia.

2. Life in Xi’an and Cultural Exploration
Living in Xi’an has been an unforgettable experience. As a city that beautifully blends ancient history with modern innovation, Xi’an provided me with a unique environment for both academic and cultural enrichment. Walking through the ancient city walls, exploring the Muslim Quarter, and visiting the Terracotta Warriors were moments of deep admiration for China’s rich heritage. One of the most special aspects of my time here was Xi’an’s incredible food culture from the flavorful Biang Biang noodles to the delicious Roujiamo (Chinese hamburger), the city’s cuisine was an adventure in itself. The warmth and hospitality of the people, combined with the country's commitment to innovation, made my stay truly memorable. China, with its vibrant culture and rapid advancements in science and technology, has left a profound impact on me.
3. NPU Campus Life
Life at NPU was enriched by friendships with fellow students from around the world. Engaging with Chinese and international peers not only broadened my perspective but also helped me develop a global network of like-minded professionals. From participating in research collaborations to experiencing the rich culture and traditions of China, my time at NPU was filled with unforgettable moments.
Reflecting on my time at NPU, I feel an immense sense of gratitude. The university provided outstanding academic, cultural platforms where I could explore, innovate, and excel. The faculty, facilities, and research opportunities exceeded my expectations, allowing me to push the boundaries of my knowledge.
As an Outstanding Graduate of NPU, I carry forward more than a degree, whether in academia or industry, I will always carry the lessons, friendships, and experiences gained at NPU. I am proud to be an Outstanding Graduate of NPU, and I look forward to contributing to the field of civil engineering with the knowledge and skills I have gained here.
