Ibtihaj Ahmad, a brilliant scholar from the 2019 batch, has achieved an exceptional academic milestone by completing his PhD, graduating in March 2025. During his study, he published five articles, which were respectively published in journals such as Expert System with Applications, Computers in Biology and Medicine, and Scientific Reports. Ibtihaj Ahmad, Ph.D. Computer Science
He received his Ph.D. degree in computer science from Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi'an, China. During his doctoral studies, he worked on Medical Imaging and Artificial Intelligence, particularly segmentation, classification, and survival estimation. His research was published in high-impact categories 1 and 2 in international journals. His work on cancer segmentation, "DAN-NucNet: A dual attention based framework for nuclei segmentation in cancer histology images under wild clinical conditions," was published in Expert System with Applications, Elsevier (IF=7.5), a well-known journal in computer science. His second Ph.D. paper, "AATSN: Anatomy Aware Tumor Segmentation Network for PET-CT volumes and images using a lightweight fusion-attention mechanism," in Computers in Biology and Medicine, Elsevier (IF=7). His third Ph.D. paper, "Deep-SEA: a deep learning based patient specific multi-modality post-cancer survival estimation architecture," was published in Applied Intelligence, Springer (IF=3.4). His other research works were published in Image and Vision Computing, Elsevier (IF=4.2), and Scientific Reports, Springer (IF=4.3). During his PhD., he also attended and published papers at IEEE conferences in the USA, France, and Romania. He received the best paper awards for his research papers at the First Belt and Road Forum (NWPU). He was also nominated for the Outstanding International Graduate.
Before joining NWPU, he served as a visiting faculty member at Foundation University Islamabad, Pakistan, and National University of Science and Technology, Pakistan, where he taught courses and labs such as Digital Logic Design, Digital Signal Processing, Digital Image Processing, Computer-Aided Design, Programming (Python and MATLAB) and Digital System Design to undergrad students from computer and software department.
He got his master's degree in computer engineering from the National University of Sciences and Technology, Pakistan. He published five research papers during his masters degree. His master's research was focused on Medical Imaging and Machine Learning. He got his bachelor's degree in electrical (electronics) engineering from COMSATS, Pakistan. He received national funding for his final-year project. He received the third-best project award for his bachelor's final year project at a provincial-level summit. His bachelor's final year project was also presented and published at a conference in Malaysia.
Ibtihaj Ahmad is currently working as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Institute of Health Data Science of China, School of Public Health, Shandong University, China. His research interests at the postdoctoral station include medical big data processing and Agentic AI-based multi-modal and multi-modality systems and large language models for clinical decision support systems.
